Bother. The Chernobyl ghost town motorcyclist is apparently a mostly-liar (she went there on a tourist permit, on a car tour that anyone can get). Pity. I learned this today from the same place I originally learned of it, Neil Gaiman's webjournal, which quotes a Ukranian named Mary Mycio who is currently writing a book on Chernobyl and discovered Elena's story wasn't true after being intrigued by the story and making inquiries. Mycio says there are lots of factual errors in Elena's story. Read more here.
